The Windy City Girl living in West Sligo!

I’m Geraldine and here’s my story…

I was born in Ireland, but I grew up in Chicago (that is another story for another day), and my plan when I finished high school was to go to college in Sligo, Ireland for 4 years. At the age of 18, I moved to a little place on the West Coast of Ireland called Dromore West, where my dad grew up. I lived on a little road on my own, in the middle of nowhere, but it wasn’t that scary as my 2 Uncles and my Granny lived on the road too! Well college came and went, and years moved on, but I still stayed in Dromore West.

I may have fallen in love with someone, but I also fell in love with West Sligo. I cannot imagine being anywhere else but here.

Declan and Me on the Stairway to Heaven – it wasn’t as romantic as it sounds!

Declan and I built a new house on his family land, not too far from where my own house was, and “home” is with him and our dog Murphy. We live on top of a little mountain, called the Ox Mountains, waking up every morning with green fields and sheep all around me; looking out at the beautiful Atlantic Ocean with Slieve League in the background.

There is a reason why WB Yeats called Sligo “the land of heart’s desire”, and I think where I live is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I love the quietness of life, the little community I am a part of and this little life I have made, and all I want to do is share this beautiful place with others!  This is what inspired me to set up Travents Ireland.

From being an American “tourist” visiting Ireland I know what it feels like to explore this country and, even now living here, there is nothing more I love than travelling around Ireland to see what I haven’t seen yet. I think I could spend my whole life travelling around Ireland and still not see everything it has to offer!
